The city of Mitaka extends to the south of Mitaka Station, which is 20 minutes from Shinjuku Station on the JR Chuo Line, and is located almost in the center of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. It occupies an area of 16.50 square kilometers, and is about 50 to 55 meters above sea level. While the city neighborhoods are mostly residential with a “forest” of high-rise condominiums around Mitaka Station, there are also many farmlands and forests showing traces of the old Musashino area, as well as rich natural greenery along the four water routes of the city―the Nogawa, Senkawa and Kandagawa rivers and the Tamagawa Josui Canal.
