Here are some popular art and culture spots of Mitaka City.

Mitaka City Yuzo Yamamoto Memorial Museum

 The western building where literary artist Yuzo Yamamoto lived from 1936 to 1946 is open to the public as a memorial museum. The building is a city-designated cultural asset, and the beautiful brick exterior, the chimney and fireplace, and the stairway with stained glass are all unique. There are permanent exhibits—such as of handwritten drafts and Yamamoto’s favorite items—as well as special exhibits held to honor the achievements of the writer, who is also an honorary citizen of Mitaka City.

Mitaka Picture Book House in the Astronomical Observatory Forest

 This is an exhibition facility established and operated by Mitaka City with the cooperation of the National Astronomical Observatory. A building that dates back to the Taisho Era located in Astronomical Observatory Forest is preserved and used to foster intellectual curiosity and sensitivity in children through themed exhibits of picture books. In particular, these exhibits are meant to spark an interest in science and astronomy, and provide experiences with nature during each season in the spacious garden. Admission is free.

Mitaka City Gallery of Art

 This small but authentic art museum is in the building facing Mitaka Station’s south exit. Special exhibits are held twice a year on average covering a wide variety of genres, mainly spotlighting modern to contemporary art. The museum is also a venue for city residents to display their works of art.

Dazai Osamu Literary Salon

 Mitaka City established this facility dedicated to literature on the former site of Isemoto, a liquor shop frequented by Dazai, who lived near Mitaka Station and wrote many famous works. A panel exhibit here introduces the works and life of Dazai, and special exhibits display reference materials such as handwritten drafts (copies), and first editions of his books. You can also buy Dazai Osamu goods. Admission is free.
