In the interests of protecting expectant mothers and their unborn child, the cost of health checkups for pregnant women is to fall. Previously, five checkups were provided free of charge from public funds. This number has now risen to fourteen, the figure recommended by experts in the field.Costs arising from physical examinations at maternity hospitals and trips to a home town to give birth will be covered under the new system. It covers Japanese or foreign nationals on the Mitaka citizens’ register who have submitted a Pregnancy Registration form (Ninshin Todokedesho) after April 1 or before March 31 and who intend to take health checkups after April 1 (supplementary aid).
