Are your disaster preparations adequate?

Water damage due to localized heavy rain and typhoons is commonplace from summer to autumn. In 2005 and 2006, Mitaka city suffered from flooded roads, water damage to houses, and similar problems.
Japan is also extremely prone to earthquakes. Should Tokyo or any other major city in Japan fall victim to a large earthquake, there would be a large number of casualties and fatalities. To minimize the risk from earthquakes and other disasters, take time to confirm local evacuation sites and ensure that you are ready to react when disaster strikes.

Mitaka Disaster Preparedness Map and Flood Hazard Map are now available.

A ‘Mitaka Disaster Preparedness Map’, with illustrations of disaster preparedness precautions and evacuation sites for use when an earthquake strikes, and a‘Flood Hazard Map’ identifying sites of possible flooding during heavy rain, are now available.

Disaster Support for Foreign Residents

In January 2004, Mitaka City entered into a ‘Disaster Preparedness Partnership Agreement’ with Mitaka International Society for HOsPitality (MISHOP) (Tel: 0422-43-7812). In the event of a disaster, a Disaster Support Center for Foreign Residents in MISHOP will be established to provide interpretation services and advice, confirm the safety, and collect and disseminate essential information. The Center will work to ensure appropriate action is taken by all foreign residents in the event of a disaster and to provide support, in cooperation with the city, wherever possible.

Now recruiting disaster preparedness volunteers!

Tokyo Metropolitan Government is now recruiting volunteer interpreters who are willing, in the event of a disaster, to assist non-Japanese speaking foreign residents at consultation counters, evacuation sites, hospitals and other locations. When disaster strikes, many people have to rely entirely on disaster preparedness volunteers. We hope you will consider enrolling as a volunteer to help the foreign citizens of Mitaka City.
