STOP! Global Warming
~Mitaka Municipal Office was transformed into a “Super Eco Building”~

As a part of measures we are taking against global warming, Mitaka City implemented the “Super Eco Government Building Project” to decrease the environmental burden of the Municipal Office, which has been in use for more than 40 years since 1965. We received a subsidy from Tokyo Metropolitan Government to cover the full amount of the project.

(1) Installed double-glazed glass in the windows

Installed double-glazed glass in the windows

The window panes of the municipal offices, including the chamber, were replaced with“vacuum double glazed” glass with high heat insulation capacity, which improves the efficiency of air conditioning to reduce electricity and gas use. We are currently displaying both the old and new panes (photo 1) on the first floor of the municipal office, to demonstrate the difference between their heat insulation. Please come to see and touch them.
Also, ventilation windows were installed on the fifth floor to increase the airflow and release the heat inside of the building without using electricity during spring and fall.

(2) New lawn in the courtyard

Grass was planted in part of the courtyard

Grass was planted in part of the courtyard (approx. 400 m2) to reduce the heat island effect as well as to provide a green oasis (photo 2).Also, photovoltaic units were installed (photo 3) to automate lawn watering with generated power for labor-saving (surplus electricity is used in the municipal office).
Hana-to-midori-no-hiroba (Mure 1-chome) will be established as a hub to develop human resources for lawn maintenance and to grow grass for the replacement of damaged lawns.
